GISMA Business School Scholarships for MBA Program

The following describes the opportunities through which the GISMA Foundation can offer financial assistance to help cope with the funding of the program tuition in GISMA’s full-time MBAprogram. Enabling program participation of capable applicants, who cannot come up with the full tuition on their own is an integral objective of the GISMA Foundation. To that end, GISMA raises scholarship funds, which are then used to fund partial scholarships.

1. Scholarships based on Merit

GISMA Foundation has stipend funds available, which can be allocated to applicants with exceptional qualifications. The goal is to attract highly qualified individuals to take up their studies here at GISMA. The assistance takes the form of full or partial scholarships covering between 25% and 100 % of the overall tuition fee.

The written request for a scholarship should include:
• Information on the GMAT result (Score > 700),
• Detailed description of the applicant’s financial situation (Family savings, income situation, additional lines of credit),
• Description of further exceptional qualifications, e.g. career path and/or current position in the company/organization,
• Application for a specific scholarship amount; respectively, information on what part of the tuition can be self-financed is a must

2. Partial Scholarships based on Merit and Financial Need

GISMA Foundation has further scholarship funds available for applicants, whose financial need can be assessed and verified. With this, GISMA wants to enable participation of those applicants in the program, which with their current financial means cannot fund the program by themselves. The assistance takes the form of partial scholarships covering between 25 % and 75% of the overall tuition fee.

The written request for a partial scholarship should include:
• Detailed description of the applicant’s financial situation (Family savings, income
situation, additional lines of credit),
• Application for a specific scholarship amount; respectively, information on what part of
the tuition can be self financed is a must
• Information on the GMAT result (Score > 600).

Please note:
GISMA Foundation is in the fortunate position to be able to award significant amounts as financial assistance. The sources of this funding obligate us to verify the consumption according to the before mentioned restrictions and criterions. We therefore ask for your understanding for the necessary effort in the assessment of your application.

Applications deadlines are: November 30, March 30, and May 30.

The Scottish Graduate Programme in Economics (SGPE)

The SGPE combines the research and teaching expertise of eight Scottish Universities (Edinburgh, Glasgow, Heriot-Watt, St. Andrews, Stirling, Dundee, Aberdeen and Strathclyde) to provide graduate students with a high quality and thorough training in economics and to furnish them with the skills of the modern professional economist. The Scottish Graduate Programme comprises a MSc (Masters) course based at the University of Edinburgh and optionally up to three years further study towards a PhD (Doctorate) at any of the participating universities.

The Masters course, which lasts for one year if taken full-time and two years if taken part time, leads to the award of MSc in Economics or MSc in Economics (Finance). The Masters course also forms the compulsory year of coursework and research training for the doctoral component.

For further details, please visit the SGPE website.

The SIRE development will further strengthen the SGPE:

 - The step improvement in quality and international profile of economics research in Scotland will enhance graduate recruitment.
 - The injection of new high quality senior and junior posts will strengthen and deepen the pool of MSc teaching staff and PhD supervisors.
 - The development of advanced training courses, master classes and workshops, along with other SIRE activities will enhance the provision of the PhD programme.
 - The associated creation of a substantial number of new PhD studentships will boost the quality and number of PhD students.

Overseas Research Students Awards Scheme (ORSAS)

ORSAS was set up by the Secretary of State for Education and Science in 1979 to attract high-quality international students to the United Kingdom to undertake research. The Scheme is funded through the four UK higher education funding bodies (for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland).

From 2006 onwards, participating Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) have received an annual grant to fund ORSAS and selected their ORSAS award holders internally. The grant is allocated by formula and reviewed periodically with regard to postgraduate research student recruitment and related data. The current formula allocations are set to run from 2006-07 until the end of 2008-09.

Prospective applicants should contact institutions directly for information on how to apply for an ORSAS award. Follow the links to learn more about ORSAS in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

ORSAS awards beyond 2009

The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) will not be able to fund ORSAS after 2009. This change applies to England and Wales only; other UK Funding bodies have yet to make a decision about the future of the ORSAS awards in Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

25 Prominent Reasons Why Businesses Don’t Succeed

Businesses fail to succeed for many reasons. It is important to understand those reasons so that you can decide whether or not you are up to the challenge. The reasons below x-ray some critical issues to consider when venturing into any business. They are key points:

1.    Fear of Uncertainty: This may be the fear of success or the fear of failure, fear of stepping out of one’s comfort zone to try something new, or the fear of trial and error.
2.    Failure to plan: When you fail to plan, then you are planning to fail.
3.    Lack of funding
4.    Procrastination: The mind of “I will do it Tomorrow or Later” .This is a thief of time.
5.    Excuses! Especially making an excuse for any and everything that causes you to stumble… Be determined! Irrespective of any obstacles in your environment.
6.    Engage yourself positively: Doing busy work. Keeping busy doing unimportant tasks.
7.    Inability to delegate tasks. Sometimes delegation saves your business. If you have a weakness, hire someone who could turn that weakness into strength. Use others to complete simple time consuming tasks so that you can do other things.
8.    Failure to Research: Lack of adequate feasibility studies may leads to failure.
9.    Failure to Market: Voice out your product or service in all ways you could. Don’t be shy!
10.    An inconsistent advertising campaign: It is better to have a ton of small ads on a regular basis than one large ad on a monthly or yearly basis.
11.    Be considerate with your price. Do you calculation very well. Your pricing is too low, thus resulting in a negative cash flow.
12.    Bad accounting practices: Seek professional advice.
13.    Choosing quantity over quality
14.    Dishonesty
15.    Not fixing mistakes.
16.    Not completing tasks in a timely manner. NB: Timeliness is an essential tool.
17.    Inability to follow-up: You should always follow-up by email, mail, or phone.
18.    Not listening to client or customer. Clients or customers are the reasons for business existence. They should be seen as kings and listened to.
19.    Spending too little: It takes money to make money.
20.    Spending too much: Purchasing items when you don’t need them, upgrading when the older version will do, letting suppliers talk you into things you cannot afford, and not budgeting.
21.    Being unprepared for fluctuations in business: Boom times when demands are high as well as slow times when you are struggling to get by. (Put money away during boom times to prepare for slow times.)
22.    Lack of diversification: If you only offer one product or service, losing it can destroy your business. Inability to think of how to create new business from your existing one (Keyword is ‘Innovation’).
23.    Reputation: While a good reputation will gain you tons of business, a bad reputation could close your business.
24.    Cockiness: There is nothing wrong with feeling great about your products, services, or accomplishments. Just don’t let pride and arrogance destroy your customer relations.
25.    Discouragement: Giving in to your feelings of discouragement, when things do not work out the way you planned or succeeds as fast as you thought. Also allowing others to feed on any discouragement you may already feel. Do not see failure at instance discourage you. It should serve as a stimulus to drive you ahead!

Please be conscious of these reasons to be successful in business adventure!

The World As I see It by Einstein

"How strange is the lot of us mortals! Each of us is here for a brief sojourn; for what purpose he knows not, though he sometimes thinks he senses it. But without deeper reflection one knows from daily life that one exists for other people -- first of all for those upon whose smiles and well-being our own happiness is wholly dependent, and then for the many, unknown to us, to whose destinies we are bound by the ties of sympathy. A hundred times every day I remind myself that my inner and outer life are based on the labors of other men, living and dead, and that I must exert myself in order to give in the same measure as I have received and am still receiving...

"I have never looked upon ease and happiness as ends in themselves -- this critical basis I call the ideal of a pigsty. The ideals that have lighted my way, and time after time have given me new courage to face life cheerfully, have been Kindness, Beauty, and Truth. Without the sense of kinship with men of like mind, without the occupation with the objective world, the eternally unattainable in the field of art and scientific endeavors, life would have seemed empty to me. The trite objects of human efforts -- possessions, outward success, luxury -- have always seemed to me contemptible.

"My passionate sense of social justice and social responsibility has always contrasted oddly with my pronounced lack of need for direct contact with other human beings and human communities. I am truly a 'lone traveler' and have never belonged to my country, my home, my friends, or even my immediate family, with my whole heart; in the face of all these ties, I have never lost a sense of distance and a need for solitude..."

PhD Studentship Opportunities in Physical Oceanography (ECOSHAPE/BWN Project)

NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research is a research institute part of the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research NWO. NIOZ was founded in 1876 and is one of the oldest marine institutes in Europe.  Its mission is to gain and communicate scientific knowledge on seas and oceans for the understanding and sustainability of our planet, and to facilitate and support marine research and education in the Netherlands and Europe.

Department of Physical Oceanography has a vacancy for a PhD student (ECOSHAPE/BWN project)

We are looking for an enthusiastic and creative person with a MSc degree in Physical Oceanography, Civil Engineering or Physics, preferably with experience in coastal hydrodynamics and affinity with observational work. Fluency in English is a prerequisite. We expect that the candidate will successfully complete a PhD thesis

Job description:
As part of the “Ecoshape/Building with Nature” project “Budget modelling of fines in the Dutch coastal zone”, measurements will be carried out in the Dutch coastal zone (North Holland) with the aim of determining the variations in concentration of suspended particulate matter (SPM) on seasonal as well as tidal time scales; moreover, spatial variations will be determined both in the vertical and cross-slope directions. In these measurements, newly developed calibration techniques will be used. This program has been inspired by recent measurements showing hot spots of high SPM concentrations, the presence of which could radically change the budget estimates that are in use to date. The PhD-project involves the active participation in the four measurement campaigns, the analysis and interpretation of the data, and the development of conceptual physical models for understanding the dominant features. Numerical work will be carried out jointly with linked projects. An important part of this project is also the communication and exchange of results with participants from other Ecoshape/BwN projects.

We offer a PhD position for 4 years. This includes a pension scheme, a health insurance allowance, a yearly 8% vacation allowance, year-end bonus and flexible employment conditions and initial help with housing for foreigners. Conditions are based on the Collective Employment Agreement of the Research Institutes.
