The World As I see It by Einstein

"How strange is the lot of us mortals! Each of us is here for a brief sojourn; for what purpose he knows not, though he sometimes thinks he senses it. But without deeper reflection one knows from daily life that one exists for other people -- first of all for those upon whose smiles and well-being our own happiness is wholly dependent, and then for the many, unknown to us, to whose destinies we are bound by the ties of sympathy. A hundred times every day I remind myself that my inner and outer life are based on the labors of other men, living and dead, and that I must exert myself in order to give in the same measure as I have received and am still receiving...

"I have never looked upon ease and happiness as ends in themselves -- this critical basis I call the ideal of a pigsty. The ideals that have lighted my way, and time after time have given me new courage to face life cheerfully, have been Kindness, Beauty, and Truth. Without the sense of kinship with men of like mind, without the occupation with the objective world, the eternally unattainable in the field of art and scientific endeavors, life would have seemed empty to me. The trite objects of human efforts -- possessions, outward success, luxury -- have always seemed to me contemptible.

"My passionate sense of social justice and social responsibility has always contrasted oddly with my pronounced lack of need for direct contact with other human beings and human communities. I am truly a 'lone traveler' and have never belonged to my country, my home, my friends, or even my immediate family, with my whole heart; in the face of all these ties, I have never lost a sense of distance and a need for solitude..."

PhD Studentship Opportunities in Physical Oceanography (ECOSHAPE/BWN Project)

NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research is a research institute part of the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research NWO. NIOZ was founded in 1876 and is one of the oldest marine institutes in Europe.  Its mission is to gain and communicate scientific knowledge on seas and oceans for the understanding and sustainability of our planet, and to facilitate and support marine research and education in the Netherlands and Europe.

Department of Physical Oceanography has a vacancy for a PhD student (ECOSHAPE/BWN project)

We are looking for an enthusiastic and creative person with a MSc degree in Physical Oceanography, Civil Engineering or Physics, preferably with experience in coastal hydrodynamics and affinity with observational work. Fluency in English is a prerequisite. We expect that the candidate will successfully complete a PhD thesis

Job description:
As part of the “Ecoshape/Building with Nature” project “Budget modelling of fines in the Dutch coastal zone”, measurements will be carried out in the Dutch coastal zone (North Holland) with the aim of determining the variations in concentration of suspended particulate matter (SPM) on seasonal as well as tidal time scales; moreover, spatial variations will be determined both in the vertical and cross-slope directions. In these measurements, newly developed calibration techniques will be used. This program has been inspired by recent measurements showing hot spots of high SPM concentrations, the presence of which could radically change the budget estimates that are in use to date. The PhD-project involves the active participation in the four measurement campaigns, the analysis and interpretation of the data, and the development of conceptual physical models for understanding the dominant features. Numerical work will be carried out jointly with linked projects. An important part of this project is also the communication and exchange of results with participants from other Ecoshape/BwN projects.

We offer a PhD position for 4 years. This includes a pension scheme, a health insurance allowance, a yearly 8% vacation allowance, year-end bonus and flexible employment conditions and initial help with housing for foreigners. Conditions are based on the Collective Employment Agreement of the Research Institutes.

Applications:
To apply, please send a cover letter, CV, statement of research interests, experiences, and names and contact information for references who are familiar with your work to the HRM Department, attended to Ms. J. Evers, Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research, P.O. Box 59, 1790 AB Den Burg, Texel, The Netherlands or email to: jobs@nioz.nl  (PDF format preferred)

Closing Date:  November 22, 2009 or until a qualified candidate is identified.

The position involves a temporary appointment for a total of 4 years. Envisaged starting date: 1st January 2010.
