Master's Degree Programmes


Universities in Sweden offer a large number of Master's Degree Programmes taught in English. These programmes are open to both Swedish and foreign students with a Bachelor's degree (a Swedish Kandidatexamen) or equivalent academic qualifications.

Before you apply for a Master's Degree Programme you should make sure that you have the required academic qualifications and language skills.

Check the programme description(s) carefully for detailed information on requirements and documentation. Please note that the requirements stipulated for each programme may differ from those mentioned here. This information can be found on the web of each programme. If you have questions regarding the requirements, please contact the university directly.

Application Procedure (Master's Degree and Undergraduate Programmes)

How to apply for a master's programme:
  • Check the programme description(s) carefully for detailed information.
  • Fill in the application form on-line. Please note that the postal address and e-mail address given will be used for all future communication. It is therefore very important that all correspondence information is correct.
  • Please check the information you have given carefully. Submit your application by clicking the "Send application" button.
  • Print out the cover sheet as instructed on the web page. Only part of the information you have given will be stated on the cover sheet. The cover sheet must be signed by you and sent by post to the address mentioned below.
  • Sign your cover sheet, attach all required documentation and send it by post to the address stated on the cover sheet. Applications missing the signature of the applicant will invariably be rejected.
  • Make sure that your cover sheet including supporting documentation will reach the address mentioned below, before stated deadlines. Applications sent by fax or e-mail as well as online applications without supporting documentation, will not be considered.

Requirement for Studying in Sweden (Part 2)


English Language Requirements

For most courses and programmes taught in English the language requirement is set to the equivalence of English studies at secondary level in Sweden, English course B. For some courses the requirement is set to the lower level, English course A.

If your secondary school qualifications in English are not considered to meet these requirements, you must submit the official results from an internationally test or examination, such as Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency.

Minimum test results to meet requirements:

IELTS
- Academic Training
For course B: An overall mark of 6.0 and no section below 5.0
For course A: An overall mark of 5.0 and no section below 4.5

TOEFL
- Paper-based
For B: Mark 4.0 (scale 1-6) in the written test and a total score of 550
For A: Mark 4.0 (scale 1-6) in the written test and a total score of 500

- Computer-based
For B: Mark 4.0 (scale 0-6) in the essay rating and a total score of 213
For A: Mark 4.0 (scale 0-6) in the essay rating and a total score of 173

- Internet-based
For B: Mark 17 of (scale 0-30) in the written test and a total score of 79
For A: Mark 17 of (scale 0-30) in the written test and a total score of 61

All TOEFL results must be sent straight from the ETS with the institutional code 9520.
English Language Test Exemptions (Master's Degree Programmes). Some students may be exempt from submitting formal test evidence. These are:
  • Students who have a Bachelor's degree from a university where English is the only language of instruction, according to the latest edition of International Handbook of Universities.
  • Students who have a Bachelor's degree (a Swedish Kandidatexamen or equivalent academic qualifications) with English as the major subject.
  • Students who have a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Science or Technology from India or Pakistan.
  • Students who have 30 HE credits from a Nordic country and the language of instruction of the course/programme/university is English.

Requirement for Studying in Sweden (Part 1)


Documentation (Master's Degree Programmes)

Your application must be supported by the following documentation, sorted in the same order as this list. Put all documents in the same envelope. One set of documents is sufficient.

If you did apply last term, please note that you only have to send in new documents now; duplicate sets of documents will only delay the processing.

1. Cover sheet.
2. Certificates and diplomas from previous education at an internationally recognized university.
3. Transcripts of records (including course list). Sort them in reversed chronological order, i e put the last received document on top.
4. A copy of your passport or some other document of identification.
5. Proof that you meet the specific requirements of the programme(s) chosen (for example a short essay or a letter of intent is required in some cases, check programme description).
6. Proof of English skills.

Please avoid staplers, paper clips, and documents with text on two sides.

All documents, copies and scanned documents supporting the application must be stamped and signed by the issuing institution, or a notary public.

Please note that applications not supported by officially certified documents will not be processed.

The documents should be in the original language, and in officially certified translations into Swedish, English, French or German, if the documents are issued in any other language than the Scandinavian languages.

English test results from TOEFL (code 9520) should be sent directly from the test centre and reach the University Studies in Sweden on the stated date.

Please note that University Studies in Sweden check the authenticity of your documents with the issuing institution. Applications with unauthentic documents will invariably be rejected.

How to Apply for Postgraduate Degree Programmes in Finnish Multi-faculties Universities?


To apply for postgraduate degree programmes in Finnish multi-faculties university, first turn to the appropriate university’s web page for general information.

When you register at the electronic Application Form on University Admissions (Joint Application System), you create a personal user account which allows you to save your information. The system will help and guide you through the application process, so please read the instructions carefully.

After you have saved the electronic application form, the information will be compiled into a printable PDF-document. Follow the instructions given on the Form and sent your printed and signed application with all the required documents to University Admissions Finland. Please note, that the electronic application form itself is not considered an application, unless University Admissions receives it printed and signed with all the required enclosures via regular mail by the application deadline.
